Newcastle suffered a major earthquake in December 1989, but by early 1991, it seemed as though the insurance companies would never get through all the claims. GIO in particular, started looking to recruit a structural engineer with about 20 years experience to solve their mounting number of “unsolvable” claims.

David found out about the position & although he was not what they were looking for, somehow convinced them to put him on a month’s trial. They agreed & sent him to a case where 6 consultant’s had already failed. But David was about to rewrite the rules...

In fact, using his own approach, David successfully solved this case on the first visit & then over the next 13½ months, solved 812 cases & 93% of these with just one inspection only. But what was the secret to his outstanding success? Simple...he listened to the client.

There was only one negative to David’s success: he was quickly doing himself out of a job! But there was also an emerging opportunity. There was an overwhelming need for user friendly pre-purchase building reports. David’s fresh approach was soon embraced by Solicitor’s & Agents requesting pre-purchase reports & voila… a new business venture was born.

An interesting thing happened along the way. David became interested in overseas development projects. The success of the business enabled funds to be given to establish and support some of these projects.

So that David could occasionally leave the business & travel to visit some of these projects, he developed systems that would enable others to fill his shoes in his absence, without the client being disadvantaged. These systems were to take the business into a class all of it’s own. .
